Well hello, hello!
Here we are, back for a ‘IT’S GOOD FOR YOU’ post and this one is seriously way too good for you.
I’ve been very excited all week while writing my research down and really getting major details ready for you guys because, well basically… I’m obsessed with adaptogens.
They blow my mind. I used to hear the word and not really understand what they were or why the hell I was supposed to be downing some (no offense) gross tasting powder in the morning. Good news on both ends – MONTHS ago I did research and got books to read (thank you, Moon Juice and James A. Duke, Ph.D.) so I could get the entire rundown of adaptogens. Then, I ordered a bunch. Then, I made smoothies and cookies and teas that DON’T taste bad. These of-the-moment herbs are coming in hot.
A total win-win, you know?
I always say this (because it’s THAT true), food can be confusing. There are so many people telling you to go this way and that way on the food course. So many studies and ideas, benefits and bad-for-you statements. It’s very overwhelming and extremely difficult at times, so I always say this as well: do what’s best for you. Cliché, I know, but it works. For me, I stress a lot. I have anxiety and I get worked up very easily – my mind is like a g’damn tornado and it is not stopping anytime soon. You know how it goes.
SO? I do what I can to fix it. Adaptogens being one of them. I research and read and try things out to find the best fit for me, which is a process – yes – but very well worth it.
The same goes for feeling good and eating healthy – of course there are some guidelines you should follow, those never hurt! But I also think it’s super important to find out what your body needs. By this I just mean, simply put, find out what is going on under your skin. Everyone is SO different. You have to get medical on yourself for a minute and make sure your fixing all of those problems first.
A quick example: what was going on UNDER my skin was acid reflux. So I started to drink apple cider vinegar every morning, come to find out it has a million and ten other benefits. I wrote all about it in this post.
Long story short, fixing my acid reflux lead to healthier decisions all around but also FIXED MY ACID REFLUX. Do you get it? You can make choices just to feel better, of course, always always always, but also to help yourself. Just downing a shot of ACV because they say it’s good for you can help, yes, but get a little more detail oriented about it.
Being a dental hygienist and working in the health field, I’m always looking up studies and finding out WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE AND WHY. I take it back to first grade when those W’s were your best friends. So when you hear someone say DO THIS, find out why you should be doing it. That’s my advice. Get the Google app.
Adaptogens? Everyone can benefit. This world is g’damn stressful people. HELP YOURSELF OUT. They have been known to work with your specific needs, which is just beyond. They adapt to your body.
WHAT ARE ADAPTOGENS?
Glad ya asked!
If you look up ‘adaptogen’ this is what you get: (in herbal medicine) a natural substance considered to help the body adapt to stress and to exert a normalizing effect upon bodily processes. A well-known example is ginseng.
Basically, it is a substance that is going to help balance out your body in many ways and they must be non-toxic to your bodies physical function.
James Duke, PhD sated “all plants contain adaptogenic/tonic compounds, because plants have to contend with a good deal of stress themselves.”
Interesting, no? Some plants are grown in such stressful environments that they are actually better for us because they are so strong and used to those stresses.
WHY SHOULD YOU USE ADAPTOGENS?
Via Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief by David Winston and Steven Maimes: We all deal with stress every day, and our bodies strive to adapt and keep balanced and healthy. There is a category of herbs called adaptogens that help the human body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic process, and restore balance. They increase the body’s resistance to physical, biological emotional, and environmental stressors and promote normal physiological function.”
We all know stress is a thing. Whether it’s a small amount of it’s ruining your day, it’s usually there. It doesn’t even matter what it’s about, the world we live in is just BUSY. Right?
Adaptogens are going to help with stress levels in your body, which is going to improve your overall health and wellness. I mean, we all know that shitty breakout on the skin that comes in hot when stress creeps up (stress goes far beyond just ‘being stressed’).
And, of course, there are different kinds of adaptogens. Like: maca, ginseng, schisandra, ashwagandha, reishi, and the list goes on. Each one is going to give you different benefits, and they are always listed on the bottles/jars that you buy them in. That way you know exactly what you are trying to fix and why it is going to help you.
HOW I TAKE THEM:
I am a huge fan of Moon Juice powders – maca, ashwagandha, mucana pruriens, and reishi are my favorites. I add maca and ashwagandha to smoothies all the time. I actually make easy oat bars and sprinkle them with reishi a lot too. Any easy way to add these powders to my food or drinks and I’m all for it. You can sprinkle some in tea or coffee as well.
The EASIEST way to minimize that stress!
