HI, HELLO FROM THE BAHAMAS!
This place is like a playground for adults.
You can find me on the lazy river with a tequila water (extra lime) just floating away for the next week.
Anyway, how are you guys? I’ve been talking to a few Status Salty readers on Insta messages this week about my diet, which sounds kind of weird but.. eh.. I love it. I’m so into chatting with you guys because you have the best tips. I feel like I’ve become SO much better at eating and figuring out HOW to eat right while still being super busy and on the go or on vacations just from going back and forth with some Status Salty’s readers. So, THANKS.
One major question I’ve been asked is about dairy and I want to make this very clear because I feel like it’s very mislead. I think dairy in ways can be really good for you – but I’m not a nutritionist or specialist, so as much as I repeat myself with this, I personally believe that you need to really (really) find what works best for your body. I decided to eliminate dairy a few months ago because I have horrible allergies which lead to me always being stuffy and congested. When I took dairy out of my diet, I noticed a huge difference in the way I was feeling congestion-wise.
That is really the only reason why I decided to delete dairy from my diet, but no, I am NOT DAIRY FREE ALL THE TIME.
I love Greek yogurt or some cheese here and there – which I know you can get dairy-free kinds, but there is nothing like some real dairy, you know?
It gives me some protein and obviously tastes delish, I just don’t eat it daily and I do try to avoid it when I’m eating out. I will definitely replace milk with nut milk and I stay away from ice cream when I’m home – but if I’m on vacation I’m absolutely getting an ice cream cone, like come on.
I’ve just made it work and have found substitutions, so I am not dairy-free all the time, no. Just some days.
Another question was “what will you eat when you go away?” HELLO, HI this is right up my alley!!!
First of all, have you listened to The Skinny Confidential Him and Her podcast with Tanya Zuckerbrot, the founder of F-Factor? If not, I highly recommend it. I actually plan on re-listening soon, it’s that good.
The information I got from this episode was mind boggling and VERY eye opening. And your boy toys can listen too! There’s a little scoop on healthy eating habits for everyone.
So since I’m away this week and your questions got my blogging engines running, I wanted to quickly tell you guys how I’m staying healthy while I’m sipping cocktails in the lazy river. Again, my best advice is to do what’s best for YOU. I am just giving tips that I’m doing, but you can take them however you want!
And of course, let me know your tricks for staying in tip top shape on vacation… PLEASE.
MY VACATION FITNESS PLAN…
First things first, I walk A LOT when I’m away. BA and I wake up in the morning and go for a mile or two walk just to grab a coffee. Then we make sure to walk throughout the day and get our steps in. This is huge, it really makes a difference with feeling less bloated and better overall while we are away.
I will also fit in workouts, but that’s just me. A few days just to sweat and get some cardio in makes me feel better. I always pack my resistance band when I travel – so this way I can do some squats and booty workouts before putting my bathing suit on because we all know how that goes (sigh).
Yoga is something I will do if the hotel/resort offers it. If not, I’ll do a little in my room. This helps me unwind and feel more at ease without stressing about not getting intense workouts in.
I try not to make a huge deal about working out when I’m away. My walks and room workouts keep my feeling just fine (usually). Since Boston is SO G-DAMN STUPID COLD in the winter, I try to stay outside while I’m on vacation as much as possible. I will go for a quick run or do some workouts on the beach over the gym any day.
AS FOR EATING…
I cheat, always! It’s vacation… you need to live, right? But here’s the thing… when I say cheat, I don’t mean I overeat and feel uncomfortable after every meal. I actually probably feel better about eating while I’m away. For some reason, warm weather brings out this island girl in me who only wants sliced melons and fresh coconut all day long – HUGE SIGH HERE. But then there are the moments where pasta looks delicious and the bread is calling my name, so I dig in.
I just make sure my portions are small – and I will always get a big pasta dish or any meal that’s pretty big half-boxed when I get it. I try to avoid eating the entire portion.
I will for sure eat dairy when I’m away, I just watch the amount. For example, this morning I had greek yogurt with fiber cereal for breakfast and tonight I had half of a butternut squash ravioli dish with two (small) pieces of BA’s mozzarella arugula flatbread for dinner. For lunch I had a huge veggie and spinach salad. I keep dark chocolate with me (yes, I pack dark chocolate) so I can have a piece if I’m craving sweets. I have actually been stealing BA’s valentines day gift and eating his dark chocolates that he doesn’t know about yet. So yeah.
It doesn’t have to be hard, you know? It’s actually pretty simple. Get your veggies in, get your fiber in, get your protein in and call it a day. For dessert, splurge! Just don’t splurge on an entire cake. It’s more about portion control when I’m away – so try to watch your plates. OH AND – you know I love olive oil, so I make sure to get that on my salads instead of fattening dressings. It keeps you full so you aren’t craving something to eat an hour later!
I’m a huge snacker, so when I go away.. MY GOSH. My carry on is overloaded with snacks. I have to eliminate outfits to make sure my roasted chickpeas will fit.
I bring snacks with me everywhere I go when I’m traveling. Today I had roasted chickpeas and flackers (fiber crackers) at the pool with me. They both fill me up quickly and are easy to snack on.
BUT YOU GUYS, I want to know what you’re doing for keeping it right and tight on vacation. SPILL, PLEASE. I need all of the details.
Hope you’re having a good vibe’d Monday, xxx krissy
