WHAT UP WHAT UP.
I am very (very) into mood boards. I am a die hard Pinterest and magazine fan – let’s just face it – and I’m all about not getting to swayed into one direction and keeping your focus on you, but sometimes a little oomph of inspiration is much needed.
Actually, I look at magazines and Pinterest all day long without searching for anything in particular. When I’m ACTUALLY looking, I don’t find what I want. We all know how that goes, don’t we? When you go to the store for something in particular, there is a very slim chance you are coming out with the picture perfect outfit you had in your head. Instead you have four different shirts that don’t even fit right because you were trying for something too …err… much? RIGHT!?
Letting it go with the flow is waaaaay better (usually). An outfit just, works… when you need it not to. LIFE.
Same goes for mood boards… well, sometimes. I can’t say that it always goes that way, but for me I’m better at creating a board when I’m not looking for anything.
I stumble across the BEST colors and aesthetics when I’m just scrolling or flipping through, no end in sight, yada yada yada. BOOM. Mood board of the year is created.
Just like the outfit. No rhyme or reason.
Magazine pages are stacked in my binders (yes, I have binders) and clipped into folders (yes, folders too). I go back to them often because they just scream something at me that I needed to hear at one point. Whether that be “PUT JOJOBA OIL ON YOUR FACE” or “GET INSPIRED AND START WORKING” or “THIS COLOR SCHEME IS ON POINT” there was a reason for ripping that page out.
I even started a ‘collections‘ section on KXC because I was pinning and ripping so much I figured it was only right to share the love!
So, I think you should all have mood boards – no matter what the board is for. I really, really, really believe that you will get inspired without even knowing it by creating boards or ripping out magazines or even just looking through the pages.
It takes almost no effort (just a click and a rip here and there) and it creates A TON of inspirational thoughts and ideas without even really thinking at all. WIN-WIN.
The thing that is so unique about mood boards is that you can make them all about you. Literally. I mean, come on. I know that is screaming to you on some level. YOU. It’s for YOU. From YOU. About things YOU like.
It doesn’t have to be the perfect color combo that anyone else would pick, or from the most expensive magazine out there, or an outfit that is super famous. It can be from magazines you read in high school and still hoard. It can be from newspapers, pictures from 1992, colors you secretly love, things that inspire you but maybe others wouldn’t get, anything.
It doesn’t have to be for anyone but you.
And THAT is where all the magazines as a kid won me over.
Your ‘boards’ or folders filled with ripped pages is literally a comfort zone for your thoughts.
It can all be organized or a mess, similar or different, outfits or candles, coffee or cupcakes. The world is your oyster babe.
I would recommend by just simply creating boards based on you. Just rip out pages you like. Just pin photos that speak to you. Like the colors? Add it. Love the flat-lay? Click. Does that quote make you feel something? Done.
Your secret stash of inspiration is going to stick with you without you even knowing it, and when you go to decorate your room or re-do your walls or pick out an outfit or decide on an aesthetically pleasing theme for your site, you’re going to have ideas.
You can never be too inspired.
Happy pinning, babes.
